You’ve ran the Appalachian Trail, what song (or snack) got you through the toughest miles?
CPR by Typhoon
Melted vegan ice cream, Vegan cheese puffs and anytime Jenny could find (which wasn’t very often and the occasional surprise from amazing fans who came out!) >Thai food, vegan pizza, Chipotle burrito, vegan sushi 😊
What’s your go-to pre-race ritual or superstition?
I never cut my hair for my seven consecutive wins at Western States 100 except for the two times I donated 14 inches each time to Locks of Love (they make hair prosthetics for kids battling cancer).
I used to have a pair of lucky shorts I wore for five of my seven wins at the Western States 100 (still have them😊!)
What’s the most unexpected lesson running has taught you about life off the trail?
Running is a tireless teacher and guide that reminds me just when I have something figured out, there’s more to learn.
What’s a trail or race you haven’t done yet but still dream of running?
Inca Trail to Machu Pichu.
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten during an ultra?
A few swigs of olive oil I put in a gel flask, not recommended! Read more about it in my first book Eat & Run.
If you weren’t a runner, what would your dream job be?
Sometimes I fantasise about when I retire, I’ll work at a natural food store, COOP re-stocking the bulk bins 😊
Since I always had to work a job during my peak running/racing years I guess my dream job would’ve been to just be a runner;)
Best place in the world you’ve ever run (and why)?
Wherever I find myself running – always find the joy of running no matter pavement, trail, mountains or desert. But if I had to say one place it’d be the Himalayan Range, Kumbu Valley, the scale of that landscape is on another level.
You’re known for being plant-powered, what’s your dream post-race meal?
Any Thai food – noodles, curry, Tom Kah-coconut soup w/rice – love it all!
Any advice you’d give your younger self, back when you first laced up your shoes?
Keep following your passion, stay humble, yet confident and let the trail lead the way.
